Mid-year Population Estimates for England and WalesThe 2025 mid-year population estimates for England and Wales will be released in July or August. This will include revisions for mid-2022, mid-2023, and mid-2024 estimates to incorporate improved international migration estimates. On 11 May, the Office for Statistical Regulation published a review of compliance with the Code of Practice for Statistics for the mid-year population estimates for England and Wales. This reiterated the limitations, especially around our local estimates, which we have acknowledged previously in our Quality and methodology information for mid-year population estimates report. We will publish information on our plans for improving population estimates in July. Following the release, you will be able to hear more about the latest population estimates as well as our plans for making improvements during a webinar on Wednesday 2 September.
Long-Term International MigrationThe latest long-term international migration (LTIM) estimates were published on 21 May, accompanied by supporting articles. Whilst methods remained consistent with those used in November’s publication, we have overcome previous data limitations set out in November 2025, including the emigration of those whose initial reason for migration was family related. These changes have mainly affected family emigration and we have made improvements to better estimate those who have permission to remain in the UK. In addition, the inconsistencies in some visa data highlighted in our previous release have now been resolved. In her blog, Sarah Crofts, Deputy Director of Migration Statistics looks at the current trends and the reasons behind the fall in immigration in this, the second release of data using the improved methodology introduced in November 2025. In April, Mary Gregory, Executive Director for Population, Census and Social Statistics Group, wrote to the Office for Statistics Regulation to update on these improvements to migration estimates. We also published an explanation on UK emigration. This article provides further insight on British nationals moving abroad and what we know about where they go when they leave the UK.
Feedback on non-UK born estimatesOn 21 May, we published estimates of the non-UK born population as part of the release of long-term international migration statistics. We are asking for feedback on uses for country of birth and/or nationality estimates to ensure the direction and prioritisation of this work take your needs into account.
Births in England and WalesAs part of our actions from the 2023-24 public consultation, our Births in England and Wales outputs have been combined and improved. We have now published three releases in this new format and are interested in feedback from our users. As part of our recent Births in England and Wales: 2025 release we published an expanded set of country breakdowns for Total Fertility Rate (TFR) for mothers' country of birth by census year. The new table increases the number of countries and regions for which we provide these statistics for from 30 to over 90. We are interested to hear how these data will be used and the feedback will help to shape our plans.
Past and projected period and cohort life tablesOn 15 May, we published the 2024-based past and projected period and cohort life tables. The bulletin and tables provide data on life expectancy for 1981 to 2074 using observed and projected mortality data from the 2024-based national population projections. Alongside the bulletin, we have updated our life expectancy calculator to include the latest data. This can be used to find out how long someone of a particular age and sex is projected to live for given assumed future mortality improvements (cohort life expectancy), and the chance of living to be aged 100 years.
