Today is Tuesday. Somewhere between “we’re exploring AI” and “AI runs half our funnel” is a very large gap, and most GTM teams are stuck in it. Register here for tomorrow’s webinar to see how one GTM team closed it.

For beauty-meets-wellness brand Megababe, meeting customer needs means tapping into a white space in the market for unconventional products, especially those that hold stigma or embarrassment for the customer.

Its mission since launching in 2017 has been to create products that “Big Beauty ignores,” according to founder Katie Sturino. The brand’s lineup includes products often not found in the beauty aisle, such as antifungal cream for ringworm or athlete’s foot, an antifriction stick for chafing, and a hemorrhoid cream.

“We are solving for more practical discomfort and less for the aesthetic need or the aesthetic expectation that the beauty industry has put on women,” Sturino said.

Chill out

In June, Megababe took another step toward addressing its customers’ personal care needs by launching Coldies, which are reusable and wearable cooling patches that can be worn as a neck collar or as bra inserts.

According to Megababe, the product generated 40% of its June DTC sales in just six days; the entire collection sold out in one week and there’s already a waitlist of over 500 people for the restock.

“Megababe is a great example of how solving authentic consumer problems can create an entirely new category,” wrote Kimber Maderazzo, marketing professor at Pepperdine University’s Graziadio School of Business, in an email to Revenue Brew. “The brand didn’t simply compete within existing segments. It expanded the conversation around body care by normalizing issues consumers were already experiencing, but few brands were willing to address.”

Ann Davis, the newly minted CRO of predictive company intelligence platform Crunchbase, is what you might call a “data dawg.” Boasting over 30 years of experience in enterprise SaaS and tech sales—most recently with Google Cloud and Looker—Davis is using these skills to make effective revenue decisions on everything from AI to untapped growth opportunities.

After picking her brain on the state of sales orgs last year, we checked back in with her on how she’s cutting through the AI noise to deliver effective decisions for her team, while always keeping data top of mind.

This conversation has been edited for length and clarity.

What are some of the common mistakes companies might be making when implementing enterprise AI?

Our revenue is not coming from that solution. Our revenue is coming from the data…The UIs are so simple because it’s all AI, that it’s all about the data sources that they have, and it’s about finding ways to leverage your customers’ existing data sources. Whether you’re talking about bringing your own key or bringing your own license; those are becoming legit big businesses for people such as ourselves that are proprietary dataset providers.

Is it fair to say those finding success with AI products are the ones seeking narrow solutions?

In financial services, the difference of .002 on a number is a big deal if you’re a VC or a corporate lending bank; the numbers really matter. Therefore they have to go seek out the appropriate data sources that are going to give them that accurate information. It’s almost like it’s a use case. I’m very focused on go-to-market, so everything I do is in relation to AI and GTM.

Chipotle takes a trip to Mexico

Chipotle

It looks like Chipotle wants to move closer to its Mexican roots, and success in the country could be a sizable growth opportunity for the fast-casual brand.

The California-based chain opened its first store in Monterrey’s San Pedro Garza Garcia neighborhood, which has long been regarded as a gateway for business into Latin America (and one of the wealthiest areas in all of the region).

The Monterrey location could just be the start; Chipotle’s Mexico director Pablo de Brito told Reuters that there are plans to open six to eight new stores in Monterrey, the country’s second biggest metropolis, within the next 14 months, followed by expansion to Mexico City and beyond.

Precedent for failure? Recent history suggests Chipotle’s decision to expand into this new territory could be ill-advised, especially considering the performance of Taco Bell in the region.

Taco Bell first attempted to break into Mexico in 1992, but according to Food Republic, the main roadblocks were pricing and lack of familiarity with the American-influenced menu items. The brand tried again in 2007, leaning into its American identity, but consumer sentiment did not change; it closed all of its Mexico locations in 2010.
